Prevention of Medical Errors (4) hours - Define medical errors and discuss ways to prevent them, demonstrate effective use of medical terminology, documentation & record keeping, HIPAA. This course in root-cause analysis, error reduction and prevention, and patient safety gives a historical perspective of medical errors in other professions.

Topics of Learning will include: 

  • Federal agencies protecting patients rights and legislature on patient safety.
  • Medical errors, sentinel events, adverse incidents, reporting, events and outcomes.
  • Factors that increase risk error, patient safety, communicating with health care team.
  • Documentation, record keeping, confidentiality; contraindications.
  • Populations of special vulnerability, hospital stays, self care.
  • Facility safety and sanitation, first aid, emergency plan of action.
  • Medical terminology, prefixes, root words, suffixes, medications, drug classifications.
  • HIPAA, medical information, consent, business associates, covered entities, health records.
