Course Description

Prevention of Medical Errors (4) hours- Define medical errors and discuss ways to prevent them, demonstrate effective use of medical terminology, documentation & record keeping, HIPAA. This course in root-cause analysis, error reduction and prevention, and patient safety gives a historical perspective of medical errors in other professions.

There will be 4 hours of CE Learning (50 minutes each). They will include:

  • (50) Minute lesson on Federal Agencies Involved with Protecting Patients Rights, Legislature on Patient Safety, Preventing Medical Errors in Health Care, what are medical errors, sentinel events, adverse incidents, reporting, events and outcomes.
  • (50) Minute lesson on types of medical errors, factors that increase risk error, patient safety responsibilities, communicating with a health care team, subtle or nonverbal communication; documentation, recordkeeping, and confidentiality; contraindications.
  • (50) Minute lesson on medication errors, populations of special vulnerability, hospital stays & surgery, common sense steps for self care; safety and sanitation of facility and equipment, fire safety and first aid, emergency plan of action; medical terminology (prefixes, root words, suffixes), medications and drug classifications.
  • (50) Minute lesson on HIPAA, medical information, medical consent, legalities, business associates, covered entities, your health records and the government.
